Actually, I don’t know if I have an expansive taste in trance, since I all I listen to are Anjunabeats artists xD.

But I like the crap out of Mat Zo, Above & Beyond, and Super8 & Tab. The rest I have yet to explore extensively or really identify with.

A lot of people think Anjunabeats trance is crap. Should I care? Fuck no.

So how mind-melting awesome is this film?

Pretty mind-melting awesome.

The action never tires, the dialogue is above par, the humor is there, there’s a good balance among the heroes, and there’s always something for the fans.

It does what it needs to do; it doesn’t need to be the next Godfather or The Dark Knight or whatever.

It’s just so much enjoyable fun. And not the kind of stupid brain-dissolving action in Transformers. Smart action, if there was anything like that.

2012 NBA Playoffs Day 1: 5 Takeaways

I hope I can keep this up throughout the entire course of the playoffs this season. Here are five thoughts from a college student at UCLA:

1. Nobody wants to hear the three letters ACL in a press conference.

And today, certainly not the Bulls nor the Knicks. Reigning MVP Derrick Rose is out of the playoffs after landing awkwardly on his left foot with a minute left in the game. Iman Shumpert tried to change direction and ended up twisting his knee. He’s out for six to eight months. This season has just been way too rough on everyone.

2. Kevin Durant is cold-blooded.

Towards the end of OKC-DAL Game 1, I only had one thought in mind: gosh, this is looking like last year…again. Dirk Nowitzki was having his way with the Thunder team for a good stretch. Then the Thunder caught up. Dirk made both free throws to give the Mavs a 1-point lead with 9 seconds to go. Then…Durant became Durant. He got such a lucky bounce with the floater, but in the end the Thunder won, and that’s all that matters.

3. The Pacers choked…again.

One year ago, the Pacers looked ready to upset Chicago in Game 1 at United Center. Today, they were poised to take Game 1…on their own floor. Then Jameer Nelson and the Magic scored the last nine points of the 4th quarter to steal Game 1. Dwight Howard may be out, but the Magic aren’t done yet. Pacers better shape up and do some damage, or this series is going to hurt them bad.

4. The Knicks-Heat game was WAY too lopsided.

27 Knicks turnovers, Tyson Chandler’s flu, Shumpert’s playoff-ending injury, Lebron’s flops, and the free throw disparity. All contributed in one way or another to making the New York Knicks feel very, VERY deflated and demoralized. Melo wasn’t the monster he was towards the end of the regular season, and Stoudemire didn’t do much either. I figured the Knicks would take the Heat to at least six or seven games. After today, they’ll be lucky to win one.

5. The dynamic of the Eastern conference has completely changed.

If the Bulls can’t get their act together and move on, they will not survive the second round. The Celtics will be dangerous. The Hawks will be smelling revenge from last year’s playoff series. I marked the Bulls to make the push into the Conference Finals, but now it seems like the Celtics are ready to do the most damage. On the other side of the bracket, Miami should be celebrating now that it doesn’t have to deal with the reigning MVP. Screw whatever they say to the public; the Heat can’t be more happy with the news that Rose is out for good.

Some of the best things in life are more or less accidents.

Today, I was going to head off to my professor’s office hours. I got there right on time, but he wasn’t there. I then decided that I should try another location where he said he might be. I was heading up Royce Hall when I heard the sound of piano. It didn’t sound like it was coming out of speakers, so I looked around until I saw an upright piano sitting right outside Royce Hall.

Given my tendencies, I just had to play. For the first round I did some Waldstein and Piano Sonata in G Minor by Schumann (the only piece I really know how to play from start to finish :P). That was certainly fun, but I had to meet up with the professor. He was there this time.

After class, I went back again. This time I let the creative juices flow and rattled off at least 10 songs in half an hour. And the result? Come see me tomorrow 2PM at Royce, granted the people who said they’d be there are back and the piano is there.

Realization

Some things are worth getting frustrated over. Other things aren’t. Today was yet another realization, most likely one that I have had multiple times in the past.

Sucks to be injury-addled, but life moves on, and I just have to adjust.

No, that’s not the realization I’m talking about.

I believe that a person truly realizes life can be, at its core, about priorities only when the stress factor really kicks in. Some things matter more than others. Time will not wait for us to cool down in our activities, so it is our duty to make the necessary adjustments and hope that things work out.

I can be a fairly stubborn person, one who is unwilling to let certain things go. I don’t understand how nearly a year has passed and some things still haven’t changed. I thought I had stamped those bad habits out to a good extent. But they continue to persist and infect my daily mindset.

And yet, I’m only starting to discover lessons that I wish I learned a long time ago. I question why I have failed to uncover these questions earlier. Recently, I have endured a rather bizarre stretch. But one thing has remained fairly constant: I feel like often I’m getting the answers a little too late.

Right now, a variety of factors has severely limited my efficiency and ability to get work done. The time is closing in on 11PM, and I have only begun to dig into my workload. Adjusting to this ridiculous wrist brace has certainly been one of the factors. But there are more, some of which I can easily force into the back of my head.

I guess there is little I can do but keep pushing forward.

Another film classic? Check.

It’s hard for me to really pick between this and Casino. Both are really good and have a lot of similarities. But GoodFellas has a sort of brewing awesomeness. The stage is focused and we’re only looking at a trio of characters. De Niro may not have that much of a physical presence, but as the movie moves along you get a sense that he’s this cold, calculating man who can do everything in the background. Things really start getting hectic in the final third. Amazing performances from De Niro, Pesci, Liotta, Bracco. I feel like if I see this movie again I’ll like it even more.

Feels like a good deal of old-school fun. Action scenes are great, animation is fantastic, 3D is complimentary and not distracting. Score is classic Williams, and what would a Spielberg movie be without some sort of daddy (or in this case, granddaddy) issues?

So all in all, quite entertaining. Not exactly one of those meaningful films, but it’s just…fun.

The CGI takes the cake. The detail of the emotions expressed on Caesar and the apes’ faces…Andy Serkis is still a genius. Poster says James Franco, but this is really Caesar’s story. There’s a lot of intrigue in the first 40 or so minutes. Lot of plot development and setting up for the big battle. So it plods along in certain places. But still fairly entertaining. I’m interested in seeing what kind of sequel they’ll cook up.

Totally thought I reviewed this…guess not. Well, dysfunctional family, here we go again. But one that’s engaging and fun to watch. Clooney is great as always. Newcomer Shailene Woodley definitely has some acting chops. My reviews are getting shorter and shorter because I’m running out of patience, but the bottom line is that there’s a reason this got nominated for so many awards. It’s pretty damn good.
